Released by the Goudey Gum Company, the 1933 Sport Kings R333 set consists of 48 cards measuring 2-3/8” by 2-7/8”.
Card fronts feature champions from a broad range of sports, including baseball, football, hockey, tennis horse racing, dog-sled racing, and pilots. It is also noted for its inclusion of female sports legends of the period. Cards have a solid color background and colorized image of the respective hero.
“Sport Kings Gum” is printed in white lettering within a red rectangle at the top of the card, with the individual’s name in white lettering within a black rectangle at the bottom edge. Card backs display the name, sport, and a biography. The most coveted pieces in the set are baseball cards of Ty Cobb (#1), Babe Ruth (#2), and Carl Hubbell (#42), and the rookie football cards of Red Grange (#4), Jim Thorpe (#6), and Knute Rockne (#35). Boxers Jack Dempsey, (#17) and Gene Tunney (#18), hockey players Eddie Shore (#19) and Howie Morenz (#24), golfers Walter Hagen (#8), Gene Sarazen (#22), Bobby Jones (#38), and Babe Didrickson (#45), swimmer Johnny Weissmuller (#21), and tennis player Bill Tilden (#16) also anchor the set. The set remains one of the most popular of any 1930s issue.
